Mental Math

  • Always say decimals as their fractional equivalents, ex. .1 as 1/10, .27 as 27/100, .395 as 395/1000

Written Math

  • To simplify fractions, rather than GCF, use repeated division: divide top and bottom by any number that divides into both (start simply, with 2), and keep doing that until there are no more common factors
  • When multiplying fractions, remember canceling, to make your life easier! Divide top & bottom by the same number before multiplying.
  • To convert fractions to decimals, remember that a fraction bar can be interpreted either as a fraction bar or as "divided by" - simply divide to get the decimal
  • To convert fractions to decimals, write the decimal as its fractional equivalent, and then reduce

Multiplying & dividing fractions
Just multiply across – you don’t need to find common denominators!
To divide, just flip the second fraction and multiply!
You can’t multiply or divide mixed numbers – you have to convert them to improper fractions first.
Adding & subtracting fractions
You can add mixed numbers without converting them to improper fractions! Just add the whole numbers and then add the fractions.
You have to convert to common denominators before adding or subtracting fractions.
